Agrias Amydon Butterfly

Image of oil painting of Agrias Amydon butterfly.  Oil painting of the endangered butterfly Agrias Amydon with its wings closed.  8x 10 inch on Gessobord.  Framed.

Agrias amydon, the Amydon agrias or white-spotted agrias, is a butterfly of found in Mexico. Central and South America. The upper side is dark brown with vivid crimson patches on the forewings. These butterflies are intensely sought by collectors. Rarely is found in the understory, as it much prefers the forest canopies. Adults only live about a month feeding on feed on rotten fruit, animal droppings and vegetables.

I find it fascinating how so many different butterflies look like totally different species when seen from the upper wing and the lower wing. I painted many of the butterflies, including this one with wings open and closed to show off this characteristic.
