North Atlantic Puffins

Image of watercolor painting of puffins

The Atlantic Puffin is long-lived, averaging 30 plus years. And like other birds with long lifespans, the young take several years to mature. Puffins do not breed until they are 3–6 years old.

Though it was listed as endangered in 2015, the North Atlantic puffin population is still in the millions but the percent drop is alarming. Warming ocean waters are killing the sand eel fish that the puffins rely on. It’s estimated only 31% of  eggs hatched ever fledge due to the lack of food for the chicks.
